My Teacher As An App

After reading this article I would argue that online classes are really not an improvement on the education world. I have taken a whole year of online classes, that is 36 hours and 12 classes on my plate. As I am writing this blog now, I can tell anyone who is reading that I did not learn very much in this year. I went to West Florida for a year to play soccer, and living in Mobile I had to take all online classes. I finished my year with eleven A's and one B. But if anyone were to quiz me on what any of the classes I was apart of I would not have a clue what to tell them.
Teachers teach. Students go to school. Online classes can not measure up. Even in this class right now, there is not much I am gaining from it. I would argue however, if we met three times a week in a classroom setting with a teacher I would be able to sing a different song. "Now, thanks to the videos she's been watching on ancient Egypt, she loves it" I would tell this girl to get over it, classes get boring just like every other aspect of life, but we must cope with it. Students need to learn from teachers, not computer screens.

Lesson: Take A Break from the Internet

In the days of now, people are getting overly excited about the use of technology. New inventions are being presented that have people running a muck. We have phones that talk to us, computers that think for us, and only time will tell what else we have coming. All of this new technology is great to an extent, however, it is not at all needed. People are becoming less social and a whole lot more lazy. With all this gained knowledge, we are losing our true instincts. If we had a nation black out and lost technology, I am positive that 3/4ths of this world would die. So for my lesson I would argue that people need to get a break from technology and go enjoy the world that God has given us. Here are my instructions:

1. Turn off your phone
2. Put away your laptop
3. Shoes are optional
4.  Go outside
5. Enjoy life

After doing this lesson I truly believe everyone will appreciate the world we have been given and realize that technology is way overrated. Thank you.

Ms. Cassidy's Class

My first grade teacher was Miss Mahony. I knew her only one year my life, yet she sticks out in my memory like a friend I have had for years. I remember that I had a blast in her class and if there was a way to compare, I would argue I learned more in that year than many years since. I really did enjoy watching Ms. Cassidy's skype interview, she seems like a very qualified teacher with a great sense of compassion about her. I also admire her for her classroom techniques involving technology in the classroom. It really is neat how kids as young as five are writing their own blogs, when someone as old as myself just learned how to make one a few weeks ago. I also agree that her teaching technique is really helping the kids evolve with how the world is evolving. I know technology is growing way too much for me to keep up with. So yes, I believe that Ms. Cassidy is preparing her students for the world they are growing up in, however, Miss Mahony did that, as well as prepare me for the world I am growing up with.
I remember Ms. Mahony because she was in the classroom talking to me, face to face, the whole day. We sat on the rug and guessed how many jelly beans were in the jar, not in front of a computer using the internet. We were always mixed in with our friends/crushes/ or even guys we did not like being social and making eye contact, not side by side looking at screen. I would argue that if our kids start their schooling career with the internet shoved in their face... no one will be friends. Well, it probably would not be that bad, but I am positive we would not have near the amount of quality relationships in the world. The internet may be bringing the world together, but I do not know how much good it is doing for the neighborhood. People are losing the ability to have relaxed conversation, people are talking to people across the world when they have someone in front of them, and they sit inside all day when it is very sunny outside. When kids are in kindergarten they need to learn how to make friends, play sports, and learn from a teacher.
I think Ms. Cassidy is a fantastic teacher, and I admire her greatly.I just think that kids need to get away from the computer more. I have a little cousin named Ethan who is eight. He is always on the computer and really does not see the need to hang out with his cousins or family really all that much. Kids have their whole life to learn about the computer, I think they need a break from it at the start.

What I've Learned This Year

Mr. McClung was a new teacher at a Junior College, he had no real experience and did what he could to be the best teacher he could be. In these blogs he posted his thoughts about his year and new ideas that came to him that would future benifit teachers and help him reflect. In the first post he wrote about his first year over there. The main point was to "stay positive." He wrote down several different bullets explaining key points he wanted to discuss. First he talked about reading the crowd. When he first started teaching he said he was very focused on himself as a teacher and really did not consider how the students were taking his lessons. He learned that he needed to be more student focused and take into thought their reactions to his lessons. In the next few points he highlights "being flexible, and communication," These go rather well together because he found out how to be flexible through communicating with his students. He learned that there was no such thing as the perfect lesson, however, I would disagree and say there definitely could be. However, through this he learned that it was okay if a lesson did not go as well as he thought, he could learn from it and better correct it next time. His last note on this page was to "never stop learning." He makes sure he is always taking in new experiences and learning from his mistakes.

What I Learned This Year (year 2)

In his second post he starts out by explaining that he has moved up to junior high students. It is again his first time, however, with more experience in his background and a new teaching method/mind set I believe he was off to a better start already. He starts off by talking about "Adapting." I would argue that this is not his frist time with this new lesson to learn. He had to adapt also in the previous section where he was transfered to his first school. In this new scene Mr. McClung had to learn new ways of teaching and communicating. It was almost like he had to just dig deeper on what he learned in his first term. he also makes a great point about needing/finding a Class Mom. I thought this was the best point he made. If you need help, ask for it. A class mom has been around and knows the ropes. She would be a great person to go to if rules are managing needed to be done. In the end he closes with the same point he closed with in his first term. Never stop learning, however, he words it as "It's what you learn after you know it all that matters." This is the same concept of never stop learning. He makes sure to inform us to always keep our minds open to new lessons and experiences.

Blog Post # 8

1. Richard Miller: This Is How We Dream Parts 1 and
After watching both of these videos, I would argue that I really did not get too much out of it. I understand that the way we write has changed throughout the years and that now we can do a whole lot more stuff from out living room couch sitting on the computer, but besides that I do not really know. I do admire this man for the accomplishments he has done and the status he has achieved over the years.
He also talks about the artist behind all the visuals used online. I liked the part about the whale hunt. I liked the pictures used even though they were a little graphic. He goes on to say that the things we can do with the computer are limitless, which I would agree with, however, I do not plan on spending very much of my time trying to stretch my boundaries with the internet.
I would argue that when I am in the class room, I will be able to find things that are natural and God created to bring into my lessons. Although I know the computer and internet will be a great deal of help, with my class I really do not plan on using the computer all that much. It just is not for me. However, I am sure that for some the use of the computer will be a great necessity.
2. Blog Post #12 by Carly Pugh
I would argue that Carly thought up a great assignment. I am sure that Dr. Strange would agree. I think this allows a student/teacher the opportunity to show their true colors and express their self. When she is talking about her assignment mentions "Creativity to the Rescue" and I think this is a quality point. Creativity is the key to learning and developing as a human.
I also really liked the video she has on her post. The music goes along very well with the scene and adds to the emotion in the video. The questions really make you think and want to be better. I would argue that she did an excellent job putting this post together.
In comparison to the Richard Miller, I would argue that Carly's was much more entertaining, however, the way she wanted to construct the lesson went about the same way as he did prior to hers. She saw a vision and made it a reality. I really liked what she had to show.
3. The Chipper Series, EDM310 for Dummies:
I really enjoyed watching these two videos. I like the first one done by chipper about procrastination. I believe I could do an idea similar to this. In edm310 for dummies I also liked the way the video was constructed. I think that I would try to do a project on excelling in your classroom.
4.Learn to Change, Change to Learn
I really do not think this video is saying anything new. Even though students are in a new age of technology I do not think the way we are teaching them needs to change. I believe that students can grow regardless.

The Start to my PLN

With the first semester of South Alabama getting half way done, I have seriously considered thinking and planning My PLN. This is what I have for a start. I really do not have too many friends right now, however, I definitely am going to make more throughout this semester as well as for the rest of my computer filled life. Twitter is a great way to get into communication with the world, and communication is one of the greatest ways to achieve what you want in the world. I have a great skill of communication and if I can then combine that with this whole internet thing, I truly believe I can develop as a student and future teacher.

Blog Post #7

After watching the Randy Pausch's video I would argue that he is a pretty brilliant man. Throughout his video we see a man who believes in inspiring his students and teaching them methods that not only are useful for the classroom, but for real life as well. He is a very selfless man who really goes out of his way to help others.
At one point in the video, I heard him talking about a football coach who told him that once everyone stops helping you, they stop caring. I completely agree with this and hope that we have better teachers and care givers out there that do not let the situation get this bad. I have screwed up a few more than several times in my life and I am very grateful that my parents, teachers, and youth pastors never gave up on me.
When Randy Pausch really dedicated himself to teaching, he did it all the way. He came up with the Brick Wall Theory. This consisted of a wall in an individuals path. The individual has the choice to either charge at the wall and get by it in hopes of living out his/her life, or hitting the wall and falling down, never achieving anything. I feel like I have conquered many brick wall throughout my life, however, I know I have many more still to climb.
Lastly, I really admire Randy Pausch's passion for fun in his workplace. He knows that in order for kids to want to learn they must have fun. He brings laughter and joy to the classroom so the kids do not have to strain to concentrate, instead they just let the learning come to them.
All in all Randy Pausch is a quality guy.

Comments For Teachers

I have had the pleasure of sharing my thoughts with two very interesting teachers using my new blog. Since I have just now finished writing to the second, I will share with you my thoughts because they are still fresh. I read a note that was written in response to the 9/11 attack that happend 10 years back. She wrote for patriotism,

passion of one's country, and the love for learning. She felt that it was necessary that all students be educated about the sacrifices our soldiers are making to keep this Country going. I completely agree and wish that I would have been more up-to-date with the world I'm living in.
I also went back to check out my first CFT. I was encouraged to see that this teacher is still writing her thoughts and that the thoughts were great ones. I really enjoyed a blog she wrote recently on Rober Frost. It was on one of his poems, Fire and Ice. She wrote about how she really did not know what way she would choose. She also explained that she felt Frost was talking about the world behind the poem. How the world is either going to do too much (fire) until we ruin it and it falls, or the world will do nothing (ice) and we will fall as well. Frost is an extremely darkly intellegent writter.

Thanks for letting me comment Ladies.

My Comment for Kids Summary. Hurray!!!!

Alexandra is the most recent student I have been able to contact. She has been talking about where she wants to visit in the world. The first place she mentioned was New York, a main attraction being the Statue of Liberty. I have been there and must say that it is quite a spectacular sight.
Adam was another student I had the privledge of communicating with. The last time I checked out his profile he was talking about different sports he enjoys playing. One of the sports he loved to play is soccer, which happens to be my favorite sport.
Dawson has a very bright blog that always brings a smile to my face. She likes to talk about dolphins in the water. She has swam with them several times and really enoys how they can just flow through. I got the chance to swim with dolphins when I took  a trip to the Aruba.
The last kid I was able talk with over blog space was Allie. She is a cute little kid with a crazy attitude. She has an October birthday and loves Halloween. I read her first post and it was "All about Me" She shared with the class that her favorite color was red, which happens to be mine too. We also share the love of Chrismas.

1. The Net Worked Student

After viewing this video, I have learned that I am not at all ready to be a teacher of a networked student. However, this is why I am planning to teach younger kids of the elementary level. Hopefully I do not run into too many child prodigies that know more than I do about computers, although this very well may be the case. I plan on teaching my kids everything they need to know in class, with various hands on activties.

In order to achieve the status of being able to teach a networked student I would need a lot of work. I feel that I am very behind in the world of technology, however, I am definatley able to get by and hold my own. I would argue that if I absolutley had to teach a student that is of the network I would be able to do it without problems. I can pick up new stuff very easily and think of myself to be a quality teacher.

I am starting to understand why the web and techonolgy are becoming so important to the students in today's classroom. I like the fact that it opens up a whole world of communication, where you can reach across the globe and chat with someone like they were right there. But like I said before, I am not at all ready at this present time to teach a student of the network.

2.

A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)

I really liked the layout she had for her PLE. It is very colorful and animated. Unfortunatley for me, I do not yet have a physical PLN, however, I do have one in my mind that is very helpful to me on a day to day bases. My PLN involves early morning wake ups, eating as much food as I can, and filling my day up with way too much stuff to do. I suppose both of our PLN's are scheduled to fit our day to day activity.

Blog Post #5

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff, Please?
After reading this poem I learned that Scott McLeod is a very sarcastic man. He is joking at the fact that some people believe it is wrong for parents to educate their kids in the modern inventions and electronic resources we now have present. He ends his section by saying that he is teaching his kids how to use all of these objects, such as phone,  internet, and others. I somewhat agree that kids with this knowledge may be more intellectually ahead of other kids that lack that experience, however, I am also one to argue that it is not as important as he says it is. I protest that spending time on the computer can be harmful, people need to get out and make connections that are real and not just online. I probably will never know nearly enough about this computer in front of me but I truly believe I will be alright without it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68KgAcx_9jU
This video was really well put together. I would also argue that this student really did his research before making this project. It was well thought out and had a lot of solid substance to it. He was arguing in this video that all the work done in school involving: communicating, taking notes, emailing, lectures, etc. can be done using this little mobile Iphone. I would argue strongly with him that this is not true. If you have ever seen I Robot with Will Smith, I am kind of like him. I start out with a not so high opinion of computers and their purposes, however, I have learned that they can be useful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06YOePeUx4o
In this video we have another presentation about how mobile networking is the Way To Go. The argument I have with is this is that I really do not enjoy mobile or online learning. I do not really care for going home and doing all this work online, I believe that schools are put into a affect and specific times during the day so we should keep that schedule and work in person. I am all for this class and hope that it does increase my mobile networking skills.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir - 'Lux Aurumque'

When I viewed this video I was really blown away with all the different people from around the world it involved. With the use of the internet this producer was able to bring together voices that otherwise would have never been heard. He was able to make a virtual harmony that was a  quality sound to listen to. I also enjoyed use of space in the video where the objects were moving about from section to section, fading in and out. The post that goes along with it is very useful and enhances the video in my opinion.

Blog Post #4

Eagle's Nest Radio was a quality site I chose to visit. It was all about kids and their enthusiasm. They played great oldies throughout the video that really added to the background flow of events. I also enjoyed how each of the kids took this project so professionally, acting as if they were on the Channel 5 news. I saw a lot of computer animated voices or manipulation of the voices in the 2nd video I watched, I thought this was a very cool way to spice up a podcast. I thought it was clever how the represented Columbus days and all the different views different ethical groups had towards them.

Judy Scharf's Podcast Collection was also one that I enjoyed reading. When she says, "the term “podcast” is a cross between “broadcast” and “iPod.” A podcast is a “radio-style” talk show. It may include music as well." I got very excited because I am a huge fan of music. I completely believe that it can enhance and bring together.

The last one I viewed was Langwitches and I would argue that this really showed brilliance from the kids part. They were able to create their own read-along audiobooks and then present them as well. I could tell the kids were really into this because they wanted to make sure that it sounded perfect.
From these three blog spots, I have come to realize I can incorporate a variety of materials into my own podcast. This has also made me quite excited to get started and learn more about the computer I'm typing on now.

C4T#1

This week I was assigned to read over some blogs that Ms. Beth has worked on throughout her past. I found them to all be very interesting and encouraging. She wrote one on, goals/achievements she wanted to complete in the upcoming years. It was more than a goal sheet though, I saw it as kind of a To Do List. I have made a life To Do List which I probably never finish but will make sure I give it my best shot. I really enjoyed the read.

#2
After reading Kelly Hines It's Not About Technology, I discovered that I underestimated what it really takes to become a teacher in a modern classroom. When she goes through the four majors points she wants to touch on I gathered that the information was very helpful. I would argue that her number one point, Teachers must be learners, is probably the best point out of the whole section. I really think that teachers must be learners in order to progress and help the students progress as well.
I also agree with her when she says technology is useless without good teaching. I believe I am actually less of technology lover than most, so incorporating that into my teaching strategy is going to be difficult. I feel like I am completely turned away from technology in the classroom. I miss the learning that took place in class and homework done at night. I am sad that we have to go home now and get online to learn about our class. However, with the times changing and everything evolving, I know that this objective is necessary in order for students to really have a chance in the real world.
#3
After reading Is It Okay To Be a Technologically Illiterate Teacher I became aware that the author was a very grateful yet, confident person who has enjoyed his life in the blog world. When he first asked this question I was quick to say "absolutely not" and after reading it I would argue that it really depends. If you are teaching a computer class, then I would say "yes, the teacher needs to know how to use one. I also believe that teachers can be completely fine with only knowing a few things about technology.
So when this author says in number five, "school inspectors who are technologically illiterate should be encouraged to find alternative employment" I would argue that he is being a little to hasty. On the other hand, in number seven when he says, "we should stop being so nice." I agree that schools can be a little lenient with their students.
#4
Through Garys Social Media Count I learned that there were a lot of changes and advances in the world happening all around. The largest number on the screen is the number of items shared on facebook. I really do not see how these apply to my professional career as a teacher, however, I would argue that it means technology is never going to stop evolving. Which also means we must continue to incorporate it into the classroom.
I would not argue that I am against all the Medea and computer related things in the classroom today, but I simply believe that teachers could complete the class with high standards without that knowledge.
5.
After watching the video A Vision of Student Today, I realized that the video was way too depressing. I think all of the students all have regular every day problems that are faced by everyone. These signs were not very effective to me, I just felt like those are things that either you need to fix yourself or not worry about. Technology is not going to fix any of this in my opinion.
I would argue that technology is a very useful and fun invention, but the key to all worlds problems, it is not. The world survived forever without it, we could do it again. These students should be happy they are in school and healthy. The only sign I agree to be somewhat lame is $ on textbooks. I just think that it should not cost that much extra for a student to learn when they are already paying to learn.

Project 2: wordle

a lil bit about me

Blog Post 2

   Did You Know?
I watched a video called "Did You Know? 3.0" by Karl Pisch and Scott McLeod. This video really opened my eyes to interesting and random facts about the world around us. Some of these were exciting, while others were kind of downgrading to the united states, and to Americans as individuals. I thought the fact that if "Myspace were a country it would be the 5th largest" was just overwhelming. Or that our English language has become five times larger than the language used during Shakespear's time. Furthermore, the fact that in just a few years we will have a super computer that will out-think the human mind is just a little intimidating.
After this video I realized that the world is moving way too quick. Why can we not have a simple world like the did in  Shakespear's time when there were only a few words and those words were fun to say. My only real other thought on this is that the world wants too much. We are a greedy nation/world who wants the best. I believe this will be our downfall in the end. I liked how they did leave one thing unknown at the end, asking "what does this mean." I think I'm probably gonna be behind in the world if all this stuff keeps up :).

Mr. Winkle Wakes
I watched Mr. Winkle Wakes by Mathew Needleman. I really think this was a quality video that spoke a lot more words than were actually spoken. This old man has been in slumber for 100 years and now wakes up to a changed world. I can see how he would not be very comfortable, however, I think I would just be impressed if so much had changed  after one long nap.
I believe though that schools have changed a great deal and are definately not the same as they were in the past. School has changed just in the past few years in more ways than I can think of. For example, all these classes that are taught half online, and half in school. I honestly believe this is not right. Some classes, like this one, I completely understand. However, with a class like Psychology, I would argue that it is just laziness. We have always been taught in the classroom and then went home to do homework. We shouldn't come to class to be told what to go do online, the teacher should just teach us, that is what they are paid for after all. I am completely against the halfnhalf classes, but this video I am all for.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
Sir Ken Robinson is a really great talker, I was kind of down when I saw this video was 20 minutes long and I had to watch the whole thing, however, the time flew by when he started talking. He made some really quality points and brought a lot of stuff to perspective with a smile and chuckle. One of his main points was that the world is so creative, no one really knows what the world will look like in five years, however, we are trying to prepare students for stuff we don't know that is coming. The things we are learning in school may not even be needed in the future, we may be even getting less prepared that everyone thinks.
He also tells a very comical story about his son's play which caused me to have a few giggles. "all children are artist, the key is to stay an artist while we grow up." This was said by Picaso, and I really agree with him. Children's imagine things that we as adults would never understand, and could never comprehend. As we grow up we loose this imagination and replace it with facts about the world, history, math. Things that we may not even need in a few years, however, with the imagination we are leaving behind I am sure we could reach further in life. I also like what he says at the end, "if all insects were gone over the next 50 years, all life would be dead... but if all humans were killed, all life would flourish." We need to do a better job.

Cecelia Gault: Young Studnet in Finland
After viewing this video and reading the blog, I have come to the conclusion that I should move to Finland to raise a family in a few years. I really would argue that the facts are there stating that we as a nation are falling behind. How can we have a 25 percent fail rate, while another country has one with less than 1. There should not be that big of a difference, and it is not because Finland is some kind of extrodinary place, it is just that the U.S is really slacking.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Student's Digital Smarts
I viewed a video that spoke to me as a future educator. One of the first things this lady says in the interview is, "I don't think students can just learn with pencil and paper, they need more." In her class she really does not rely on a lecture method, but rather a discussion type of class. She gives her students a chance to shine and stand out. They become more independent using this manner.
I also would argue that these students will fare better on future tests, and then also later in life. These students are being challenged in ways other classroom teachers do not think to even bring up in class. That is the main problem I would strongly argue in classroom now, it is not the students that are slacking, it is the teachers. They have lost their creative edge and leave it all up to computers and internet. They get too rapped up in the newest way to teach a lesson rather than just teaching.

Blog Post 1

A Little Bit About Me:

Good evening and thank you for allowing me to participate in your class this semester. I would love to share with you a few paragraphs worth of information about my life. To start, for my breakfast I had strawberry pop-tarts, keish, eggs, pancakes, biscuits, and a gigantic glass of milk. It was truly delicious. Secondly,  if you were to ask me right now how I felt about Alabama football, I would have to say I really do not have much of an opinion, however, with my girlfriend, Jessica Diane being a surprisingly intense fan I’m sure I have more to say soon.
My name is Keith Anthony Tardibuono and I was born on March 8, 1990 in Hollywood Florida to my momma, Heather Joy, and my pop, Thomas (T-Bone). My pop retired from the Coast Guard a Commander after 24 years of service and my momma is the sweetest lady I have ever met. A few years after I was born I was given a little sister named Kate Noel, and a little brother named Jack Francis. My whole family is very athletic, participating in any sport we could fit in to our schedule. I currently do not really know what level of schooling I am at right now because I have transferred through three different schools prior to this one and South really does not bond with other schools on credits well. I am pursing a degree in special-ed/elementary in hopes of being a teacher and coach. I have played soccer my whole life including three years at the college level. So far I have really enjoyed my college career and am looking forward to the rest of it. Hope you were able to learn a little bit about me from this writing. Thank you.

Randy Pausch Video:
I would argue that when I put my mind to it, I can manage time rather well. However, there are always distractions in life and those distractions can really get me off task when I am not focused or dedicated to specific plan. From this video I learned a few simple ways to manage my time better and avoid getting distracted by friends, sports, and friends. A to-do list is a great recommendation the speaker mentions during the video for a real push to get stuff done. Also, I learned that it is better to focus on doing the right thing, rather than doing things right. “It doesn’t matter how well you polish the underside of the banister,” I do not really agree with this whole-heartedly, however, I can understand how he is trying to make a point. For the most part, I would argue that this speaker did well with getting the point across with simple and easy methods.
